The Former President's Framework of Punishment and Favor

The ex-president's insatiable desire for retribution has rapidly transformed into a structured framework. During the twelve months, the chief executive's fury and caprices have adopted the shape of government actions in ways analogous to historical authoritarian regimes. Justice department officials who fail to comply are summarily removed and substituted by supporters. Critical leaders who confront him encounter legal action, trial and sanctions. Critics have been categorized under presidential orders as “hostile to national interests”, “anti-Christian” and “against free markets”, and threatened with criminal charges as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Restructured

Each situation involving legal action of political opponents and leniency for his allies exhibits its own particular characteristics. Yet, notwithstanding their particular character, they embody examples of what has emerged as a systematic method. Those incidents are anything but isolated. The administration's purge of federal attorneys and FBI personnel, coupled with his placement of devotees in high-level posts, commenced swiftly, quickly assumed a pattern, and has now been formed into a system. Federal prosecutors and the law enforcement agency have been remade into political bodies under the president's clear orders to execute his wishes. Unfairness has been made routine. It represents the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is focused with penalizing the President's perceived adversaries than they are with safeguarding our national security.

Within the System

The beginnings of this framework has been revealed in the lawsuit of three previous senior FBI executives submitted in September in the judicial system in Washington against agency head Kash Patel and justice department head another official for wrongful dismissal in “a initiative of payback against Plaintiffs for what Defendants considered to be a failure to show sufficient devotion”. The document states that Brian Driscoll, the ex- temporary head, recounts a discussion in which Patel “openly admitted the unlawfulness of his behavior”.

He had sought to shield FBI agents from being fired, the complaint alleges. Patel informed him that “administration officials” – perceived by Driscoll to be the White House and justice department – had ordered him to dismiss all those who they determined as having participated in a law enforcement case against the president. The complaint adds: “The director clarified that he had to fire the individuals his superiors told him to dismiss, because his chance to hold his own position was contingent on the ouster of the personnel who worked on cases involving the leader. The director commented that there was no way he or him could do to prevent these or any other terminations, because ‘the bureau tried to place the President in detention and he remembers.’” After Driscoll advised the director he was disregarding the agency's own regulations, Patel reportedly said “he knew that and he knew the character of the swift terminations were almost certainly improper”.

Broad Impact

After his alleged admission to the official, the DoJ and the FBI have been weakened and repurposed for Trump's revenge apparatus. Multiple of the bureau's senior executives were terminated or forced out in the initial period of the administration. About thousands of professional attorneys at DoJ have accepted a “early exit scheme”. At least several federal prosecutors, such as those in the southern district of New York, quit in protest over what they viewed as partisan influence in abandoning the corruption case against the New York City mayor, a political figure, in as a trade for his cooperation with the administration's ICE roundups of immigrants. The public integrity section of DoJ, which manages ethical violations, has been reduced to minimal staff. The equality section has been severely reduced: 70% of its personnel has resigned. 33% of top officials at the justice department have left. The section enforcing environmental law has lost half its leadership.

Rewards and Sanctions

Regarding the mayor's situation, the interim prosecutor for the NY office, she, quit in protest against what she characterized as the “quid pro quo”. Tom Homan, Trump's “immigration leader,” showed up as the enforcer with the mayor on a media outlet to announce: “Unless he complies, I'll be back in NYC.”. Additionally, another figure, earlier the justice department figure and a ex-lawyer, who arranged the arrangement, was awarded an judicial position, a potential springboard to the judicial branch.

The president's protection for crimes committed while in office, granted by the extraordinary decision of the Republican majority on the judicial body, thus preventing his legal action over the Capitol riot and safeguarding his public standing for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he relies to defend his loyalists. With such immunity, he has been liberated to authorize wrongdoing. The effect of the supreme court decision infuses his administration and the GOP down to its bones. The legal case has metastasized.
