A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this accident,” stated the country's president.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.
